Recognised Entity

ATISCHS’s Recognised Entity service extends from Brisbane to Logan. The service is delivered from our Woolloongabba and Beenleigh office and all positions in are identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander positions.

Services

Recognised Entity (RE) operates in accordance with the Child Protection Act 1999. Under the Act, the department must consult with Recognised Entity when making decisions about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.  Staff in our recognised entity team provide cultural advice to the department to support decision-making processes at all points of the child protection system, including intake, investigation and assessment, Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN), court support, case planning and placement.

The Recognised Entity has two core functions:

  • provide cultural and family information and advice to Child Safety Services to assist with decision-making in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who come to the attention of, or are in the care of, Child Safety Services; and
  • provide information to families to help with understanding the child protection process and the decisions made by Child Safety Services.

The RE’s core principal is the safety and wellbeing of the child.

Staffing

The program is staffed by a team leader, senior cultural practitioner, a team of child protection advisors, and administrative staff.
