Elissa Coleman

Role at ATSICHS? Registered Nurse at Northgate Clinic

Career background?
I was an assistant in nursing for six years before I became a Registered Nurse. I started with ATSICHS Brisbane as a graduate nurse in 2019 and after completing the program I recently started at Northgate.

Where are you from/ What mob?
I am a Bundjalung woman. However, I grew up in Humpty Doo, Northern Territory.

What prompted you to get into your field?
My Mum is a Registered Nurse and encouraged me to become a nurse and after becoming an AIN I wanted to do more – so nurse it was and if I was to become a nurse I wanted to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

What do you like most about your job?
I like that I get to work with Indigenous patients young, old and everywhere in between. I like the diversity of the patients and seeing them improve their health over time.

What does a typical day look like for you?
Screen patients for observations, have yarns, take bloods, provide immunisations for bubs, health checks, wound care and hopefully a couple of laughs.

Hobbies outside of work?
Anything outdoors. Hikes and the beach.
