ATSICHS Brisbane Jimbelunga IYHS

Skye Painter

Role at ATSICHS?  Registered Nurse – Loganlea Clinic

Career background?
I started my nursing career in 2008 as an Assistant in Nursing with a medication competency and very quickly discovered this was my calling. My early nursing career was at an independent nursing facility where after just six months I was promoted to team leader in a dementia/ acquired brain injury secure specific unit 32 beds. I completed my certificate in occupational therapy where I was able to engage with my patients in more of a non-clinical setting. I went on to complete my Bachelor in Nursing which was a lifelong dream. I’ve worked across many fields including cardiology, corrections, medical and surgical. I also participated in an International nursing placement in Laos for three weeks in remote village with limited resources and access to basic needs and resources. During this time I learned the importance of primary health care and promoting health care to enrich lifestyles.

Where are you from/ What mob?
I have a strong Indigenous background. My mother’s Mob are Kamilaroi people and my father’s Mob are Kalkadoon people. I grew up mostly in the Logan area and I’m close with community and mob.

What prompted you to get into your field?
I’ve always had strong passion for nursing and helping others from as long as I can remember.

What do you like most about your job?
I love the diversity in my career choice and the prospects it presents including endless upskilling and learning opportunities.

What does a typical day look like for you?
My day is constantly changing. I don’t believe typical is a term I would use in nursing. I can be screening a patient one minute to applying a complex wound dressing or attending school health checks where I provide health promotion and connection to community.

Hobbies outside of work?
I enjoy old skool muscle cars, driving and working on them, listening to music including a wide variety from 1920’s, jazz, country to heavy metal. And of course, my family spending quality time making memories.
