Say hello to our Community Liaison Officer Wayne
Wayne is a proud Wiradjuri man and one of our fantastic Community Liaison Officers who is passionate about working with community and promoting good health amongst our mob.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m originally from a little town in central NSW called Gilgandra, but I’ve lived in Logan for 26 years. I have been married for 31 years; we have 4 children and 10 grandkids.
What is your role at ATSICHS Brisbane?
My current role is Community Liaison Officer at the Logan Clinic. I have been with the organisation for just on six years.
Why did you choose to work in this industry or this role?
I chose to work with ATSICHS Brisbane for the opportunity to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It’s something I have always wanted to do.
What is your favourite part of your job?
My favourite part of my job is meeting and speaking with people from all different age groups throughout our communities.
What is the most rewarding part of your role?
The most rewarding part of my role is seeing our younger kids faces after they finish their school health checks and receive their Deadly Choices shirts.
What is one piece of advice you can give our mob?
If I could offer any advice to our mob, it would be to come into one of our many clinics regularly and continue with your appointments.
What advice would you give to fullas in the community who might be shame about looking after their health?
The advice that I would give them is that there is no shame in talking about any problems you may have because there are people that love and care for you, who want you to be healthy and happy and will support you no matter what. Also, to think about what it will do for the younger males around who may look up to you. It will give them the strength to speak up and start looking after their health at an early age, and by doing so, we can make it easier for every other generation who comes after us.
This November we’re promoting men’s health by taking part in the Movember campaign. To talk to someone about any health concerns you may have, give us a call on (07) 3240 8900.
