About traineeships

A traineeship is an excellent way to start your career. You’ll gain paid work experience in your chosen profession while studying for a nationally recognised qualification.

A traineeship will help you develop practical and technical skills while learning on the job. It is a:

  • Training partnership between you, ATSICHS Brisbane and also your training organisation.
  • Full-time paid job providing you with on-the-job training, while you study.

Medical reception

A medical receptionist trainee working in one of our primary health clinics is often our community’s first point of contact with ATSICHS Brisbane. You will work with our clients to ensure that their needs are met, their voices are heard, and their cultural values are respected. This traineeship will give you the skills and knowledge to contribute to the smooth running of a primary health clinic. You will learn how to combine communication, customer service and technical skills in the role. Under the direction of the Practice Manager, you will undertake a combination of medical reception functions and administrative duties. You’ll become an expert at working with our people in no time.

Business administration

The business administration traineeship provides an entry-level opportunity for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person to gain practical skills and experience in various aspects of our business operations. A year’s experience in a business environment will give you an in depth understanding of the organisation’s operational activities, and you will learn how to combine communication, technical office skills and a variety of administrative duties within your team. This traineeship may be the perfect start to your journey in the area of finance and accounting, corporate reception or health or community services. Having these skills will set you up for a successful career in whichever area interests you most.

The information and technology traineeship supports budding IT professionals to take the first step in their career. You will be exposed to real working environments and learn critical IT skills to support a range of technologies, processes, procedures, policies, people, and clients across the ATSICHS Brisbane family. Your learning will be hands on, and you will gain a general knowledge of computers, software applications, web technologies, networking, and software support. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary health care

As an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary health care trainee, you will provide professional, culturally safe, clinical care to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and community. You will work alongside our amazing clinicians including doctors, nurses, and allied health staff in one of our primary health clinics. Under the supervision of our experienced Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner, you will contribute to health and wellness checks, community education, and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for their healthcare needs. Qualifying as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health worker will not only help you to develop work ready clinical skills, but you will be valued by potential employers and have a real boost to your CV.

Dental assistant

Our dental assistant traineeship program provides an excellent opportunity to kickstart your journey in the world of dental healthcare while making a positive impact on our community. You will work closely with dentists, oral health therapists and experienced dental assistants. You will have responsibilities in instrument sterilization, maintaining a clean and healthy clinical environment and preparing rooms for treatment. Other tasks will include patient care management such as greeting patients, making follow up appointments and entering patient details into records. The different skills learnt in your traineeship will be the perfect start to your journey as a qualified dental assistant.

Which traineeship should I choose?
It’s important to choose a career pathway that matches your abilities, interests, and ambitions. When you work in a job that matches your natural style you will be happier, more productive, and more motivated to build an ongoing and rewarding career.

How much will I get paid?
This will vary between positions but is determined by the award rate, approved enterprise agreement or national minimum wage and National Employment Standards. When you apply for a traineeship position through ATSICHS Brisbane our team will go through the salary of your chosen traineeship in more detail.
How will I learn?
During your traineeship you’ll learn by both studying and on the job training. We connect you with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) who will provide you with a training plan to complete your certification and this study will match the day-to-day workplace activities of your role.

Working for ATSICHS Brisbane you will provide professional support across different teams while learning valuable skills and gaining experience in your chosen field.
What is the eligibility criteria?
You:
– must identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
– cannot hold or be enrolled in a Certificate III or higher qualification.
– must be a Queensland resident.
– need to be aged 15 years or older and no longer at school.
– must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or an Australian permanent resident.
