Deadly Kindy Burragah, more than a kindy

For Aunty Louise Watego-Coutts, Burragah has always been more than a kindy. It’s a place of culture, community and family.

From the early days of the Burragah Aboriginal and Islander Advancement Co-op Society Kindergarten to her children and grandchildren attending the kindy in its later years, the service has always been significant to Aunty Louise.

“Many of the wider Indigenous community in and around Woodridge were part of Burragah, and I am always reminded of the love and dedication my family have put into this place throughout the years,” Aunty Louise said.

For Aunty Louise and her family, culturally focused education is essential. She believes that culture should be embedded in all aspects of our lives, and institutions like kindergartens play a crucial role in shaping the people we become. Burragah provided the foundation for her children’s lives and helped teach them about the importance of connection and community.

“I don’t think just kindy should be culturally focused; I think our entire lives should be. It is not something that sits aside, but instead is embedded right throughout our lives,” Aunty Louise said.

“I sent my children to Burragah so they would be guaranteed that, and so they could grow up alongside their community.”

“As Burragah celebrates over 40 years of service, I hope to see it continue to grow and thrive, with the importance of community, connection and culture at its heart.”
