QUT and ATSICHS Partner to Trial Catapult Devices at Queensland Murri Carnival

ATSICHS Brisbane and QUT’s Centre for Data Science have partnered to trial Catapult vests (wearable fitness tracking devices used in the NRL) among U16 players from the ATSICHS Young Guns and ATSICHS Brother Boys teams at last week’s Queensland Murri Carnival. This marks the first time these devices have been tested at the QMC.

On Thursday 26, September, the players wore the devices during their games, which collected data on their performance such as running speed, time spent on the field, and movement patterns. The QUT team analysed the data to create de-identified player profiles, offering the athletes insights into their own performance.

By using this data, players not only learn how to improve their game but also gain exposure to career paths in data science and STEM. The project aims to raise awareness about how wearable tech can boost both sports performance and wellbeing while highlighting opportunities in sports beyond playing.

We extend our thanks to QUT for their collaboration and to the players for participating.
