Deception Bay housing project is taking shape
Our housing project to develop 75 new homes for First Nations Elders, in collaboration with the Queensland Government, is well underway at Deception Bay.
ATSICHS Brisbane Chairperson Keiron Lander and our project team, along with building partner McNab, were delighted to host a delegation of government officials and key stakeholders on a site tour in June.
This delegation included: Minister for Housing and Public Works and Minister for Youth the Honourable Sam O’Connor, Minister for Women and Women’s Economic Security, Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and Minister for Multiculturalism the Honourable Fiona Simpson, as well as City of Moreton Bay Deputy Mayor Councillor Jodie Shipway.
General Manager for New Business and Development Dylan Nelson said this project will deliver culturally safe, age-appropriate housing that is designed to honour Elders and support ageing in place with dignity and pride.
“When you invest in community-led projects like this, you’re not just building homes — you’re backing outcomes: better health, stronger families, safer communities.”
“This project is part of a $130 million capital development pipeline we’re leading across South East Queensland — delivering housing, health, and social infrastructure that responds directly to community need.”
Shout out to Project Manager for New Business and Development Rita Elliot for her outstanding efforts in overseeing and coordinating the many moving parts involved with such a massive development.
Along with 75 apartments (53 one-bedroom and 22 two-bedroom units), the site will feature communal spaces that encourage social interaction and foster a sense of belonging in line with our values of delivering thoughtfully designed and culturally appropriate housing for First Nations people.
Our new housing site is located on Kabi Kabi Country. The team commissioned artist Lyndon Davis, who produced a beautiful piece reflecting the cultural history of Kabi Kabi people creating winter campsites along the coastal areas of Moreton Bay to take advantage of the seasonal abundance of seafood. It features a brahhminy kite, tailor fish and wattle and has been integrated into the site, along with architectural elements that acknowledge the ongoing connection to Country.
The project is scheduled for completion in early 2026.
