Trainee of the Year completes qualification

Today, we’re celebrating our Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Trainee, Darla, who recently completed her WHS traineeship and was recognised earlier this year as the Trainee of the Year at our Annual Staff Meeting.

Darla, a proud Yidinjdji, Djabuganjdji, Nyawaygi, and Giya woman, joined our team in April 2024. She stepped into her role as a WHS trainee with a clear vision, to make a positive impact on the community while reconnecting with her culture and community.

Reflecting on her journey with ATSICHS Brisbane, Darla said that her role has allowed her to merge her professional aspirations with her personal values. “I hadn’t had the privilege to experience cultural connection to my mob, Country, or people from a young age,” Darla said. “I knew I wanted to explore and hopefully build a career where I am confident that the work I do contributes to making a difference to the community.”

During her traineeship, Darla pursued a Certificate III in Work Health & Safety, motivated to find a career where she could positively impact the lives of her community. The program has been transformative, enhancing her understanding of the challenges First Nations people face in accessing health services outside ATSICHS Brisbane. This experience has broadened her perspective on workplace safety, and she has particularly enjoyed applying cultural sensitivity and First Nations practices to strengthen our safety culture.

Her day-to-day activities involve supporting and collaborating with the Safety & Quality staff and applying her course learnings to operational project demands. Outside of work, Darla enjoys watching NRL and AFL games, and she’s a regular at local weekend markets.

As she looks forward, Darla offers this advice for future trainees: “Cultivate a growth mindset; abilities can be developed through dedication, a resilient mindset, and a love for learning, whether it be through research, workshops, practical learning, or even reading.”

We’re proud of Darla’s achievements and her inspiring commitment to the community. Congratulations Darla, on this outstanding accomplishment and look forward to your continued impact within our organisation.
