Turning conflict into care: a look at our latest GROW workshop

Conflict in the workplace—it’s something we all experience yet rarely embrace. But what if we shifted our perspective? What if, instead of seeing workplace disagreements as a roadblock, we saw them as an opportunity to grow?

That was the core theme of our “Growing Together – Conflict to Care” workshop, attended by 28 team members from across the organisation.

Over the course of this session, participants explored how conflict shapes team dynamics. They discovered their own conflict resolution styles, and practiced strategies to turn workplace disagreements into productive conversations.

A highly engaged discussion

From the moment the workshop began, engagement was high. Most attendees described the workshop as extremely engaging or very engaging. An outstanding 99% of participants indicated they would recommend the course to other staff, highlighting its practical value in fostering a more constructive and communicative workplace culture.

Participants leaned into the conversation, reflecting on their own experiences and sharing insights. Lively discussions unfolded as colleagues unpacked real-world scenarios, shifting their mindset from avoidance to active resolution.

One participant captured the energy of the session perfectly, saying, “this workshop gave me tools to approach conflict with curiosity, rather than stress. It’s not about ‘winning’—it’s about listening and working together.”

Key learnings: communication & understanding

At the heart of effective conflict resolution are two essential elements: communication and understanding. Participants explored how small shifts—such as active listening, framing conversations constructively, and identifying shared goals—can transform workplace disagreements from a source of tension into an avenue for collaboration.

Many of the participants said they learnt “different ways to deal with conflict”and felt they now had “real strategies to use to resolve conflict”.

The workshop sparked meaningful reflections and actionable insights for participants. Many expressed a shift in their approach to workplace tensions.

One participant shared, “I’ll look to not avoid conflict and try to embrace it when necessary to strengthen relationships and work outcomes,” while another stated, “I will no longer avoid conflict in the workplace.”

Beyond strategies, the workshop reinforced an empowering message: conflict isn’t something to fear—it’s an opportunity to grow. And with the right mindset, teams can harness these moments to build stronger, more connected workplaces.

This session was just the beginning. By continuing to practice and refine these strategies, we can create an organisational culture where respectful dialogue thrives.

Thanks to the Queensland Care Consortium for providing the funds to create our GROW program and thank you to all who participated! Let’s keep growing together.
