Meet rugby star Rico

With the 2024 Queensland Murri Carnival kicking off on 20 September, we are sharing this profile on a player who showcased their talents at last year’s event and demonstrated just how far passion for sport can take you!

Meet 14-year-old Rico Ornyengaia, a proud young Wik-mungkan man, with deep family and cultural connections within the Aurukun, Mapoon and Pormpuraaw communities.

Playing in the 2023 Queensland Murri Carnival for ATSICHS Brisbane’s U14s side, he was selected to represent QLD Murri’s U15s in this year’s Murri v Koori Interstate Challenge, which took place in February.

In a display of skill and determination, Rico showcased his talents from the second row, with his deadly defense leaving a solid impression in the closely contested match against the Koori U15s. The final score was 16-14 in favour of Goori Storm.

Rico’s rugby league journey started at the age of 12 when he joined the Coomera Cutters, finding his feet and the feel for rugby league. Being from a small town there was not much opportunity for the big stage, but he certainly is taking life head on and showing what he is made of.

Participating in the Sports Excellence program at his high school, Rico benefits from elite training and coaching designed for gifted and talented sporting students, empowering them to pursue their athletic dreams. Along with his selection in the Melbourne Storm Youth Academy, the program is the first step towards achieving his dream to play for the North Queensland Cowboys.

Additionally, he sets his sights on completing Year 12, aspiring to become the first in his immediate family to graduate. And if that wasn’t enough, Rico is currently trialling for South Coast School Boys Football and proudly representing the Oceanic Rugby League Team.

He enjoys spending time with his mob, playing basketball, going fishing, hunting for mud crab and gathering mud shells. He is a respectful young man and has his culture and mob behind him, fuelling him with knowledge and support.

His dedication and achievements are a testament to his passion for rugby league. As ATSICHS Brisbane witnesses this young Wik-Mungkan man’s journey unfold, we eagerly anticipate the continued success and growth of this rising star.
