Jajumbora BiOC celebrates second hub opening
This week, community, stakeholders and ATSICHS Brisbane staff came together to celebrate the official opening of our second Jajumbora Birthing in Our Community (BiOC) hubs. This new space represents a place of connection and support, as well as an opportunity for families in our community to thrive.
ATSICHS Brisbane CEO Renee Blackman spoke about the vision behind Jajumbora BiOC and how this hub will help us to continue to walk alongside families in culturally safe and supportive ways.
“The space is about empowerment and giving mums the tools, resources and confidence to live full and healthy lives with their bubs,” Renee said.
“This additional hub will allow us to provide services to more families, ensuring that every mother, bub and family has access to culturally safe, holistic care throughout their journey into parenthood,” she said.
We were also honoured to have Yugambeh Elder Aunty Robyn Williams deliver the Welcome to Country. Her presence was especially meaningful as she was the one who named Jajumbora back in 2018 when it was originally located at Waterford West. The special nature of the new hub was something that particularly stood out to Aunty Robyn.
“Walking through the door, I just felt so comfortable, at ease and welcomed. Thank you to everyone involved in putting this event together and creating a space for our community where everyone feels safe, respected and embraced,” she said.
The Jajumbora BiOC team also welcomed representatives from partner organisations, including the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health and Logan Hospital, for a guided tour of the new hub. Jajumbora BiOC Manager Carly Teer shared how this space will support mums with young babies, including weekly programs in the community space, on-site child health nurse consultations, and a safe environment where families feel welcome.
“It’s a promise to continue walking with families, listening to their needs, and creating opportunities for growth and wellbeing”, she said.
Several mums already part of the program affirmed this impact by sharing their experiences. Their stories were inspiring and deeply moving, highlighting the real impact Carly and her team have made, from building confidence to fostering strong support networks. These voices reminded us why spaces like Jajumbora BiOC matter so much.
As Jajumbora BiOC opens its doors at this new location, the team looks forward to welcoming more families and continuing to provide culturally safe and holistic support.
