Talented performer takes centre stage with scholarship win

Talented Bundjalung boy Koby is an 11-year-old superstar whose love for dance, singing, and performing saw him take home a 2023 Young, Black and Proud Scholarship.

Koby’s journey in dance began four years ago and since then, there has been no looking back. He’s a multi-talented young artist, proficient in ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip hop and musical theatre. Among these, contemporary dance has a special place in his heart, where he finds a unique blend of expression and movement.

One of the highlights of Koby’s dance journey is his annual performances, where he showcases his skills and passion. In 2022, he took the stage at the Mayor’s Christmas Carols and the Twilight Christmas Markets with the performance team from his dance school. He has also performed in Wakakirri for two years, leaving a lasting impression with his performances.

Last year, he made his professional debut in the Finding Nemo Jnr musical at Beenleigh Theatre Company, adding another feather to his already impressive cap.

Beyond the stage, Koby is also a dedicated volunteer, offering his time and talents to ATSICHS Brisbane. His involvement with our organisation, which includes helping at our Logan NAIDOC stall, highlights his commitment to his community and culture.

Despite his young age, Koby is no stranger to the challenges of pursuing his passion. He understands the financial strain his dance lessons can put on his family and plans to use his scholarship funds toward dance lessons.

“My parents do so much for my siblings and me. Winning this scholarship and being able to help pay for my lessons feels like a great way to thank them.”

He also plans to put some of his funds toward tap dance lessons to help him prepare for his Billy Elliot audition.

Looking ahead, Koby has many exciting opportunities on the horizon. Later this year, he will showcase his talents as King Agnarr in the Frozen Jnr musical, as well as four competition teams for both his primary and dance schools.

Koby’s story is not just one of talent and passion; it is a testament to the power of perseverance and determination. With his unwavering love for performance, there is no doubt that he is destined for even greater success in the future. Keep an eye out for this young star as he continues to dazzle audiences with his talent and charm.

This year, we partnered with the Queensland Family and Child Commission to help performers like Koby achieve their dreams. Read all about our 2023 winners by clicking here.
