Yarning with our Deadly Choices Officer about men’s health week

For Men’s Health Week (9-15 June), we sat down and yarned with Nathan from our very own Deadly Choices team here at ATSICHS Brisbane.

Here’s what he had to say.

Where are you from and who is your mob?

I’m from Townsville, and my mob is Bindal which is located in Townsville.

Why did you choose to work in this industry and role?

I’m passionate about supporting Indigenous youth and helping them to make healthy choices.

What does a day in your role typically look like?

In my role with Deadly Choices, I support young mob in our community by promoting healthy lifestyle choices like joining in traditional games, sharing healthy tucker, and encouraging regular health checks. I also work closely with men in our community through our Men’s Groups, and it’s been great to spend time and have a yarn with them.

What is the most rewarding part of your role?

The best part is seeing mob make healthy choices and hearing their success stories.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love spending time with my kids, going fishing, and connecting with country.

What advice would you give to mob in our community who might feel shame about looking after their health?

Don’t feel shame. We’re here to support you.
